3. Define:

a.       colony: an area of land in which a foreign country has control of the region

b.      protectorate: the local ruler kept his title and position, but his purpose was to protect the colony from foreign invading nations. However, the mother country had actual control of the colony.

c.       sphere of influence: an area where other countries recognized a certain country as having certain political and/or economic privileges.

 

 

4. Identify:

a.       Henry Stanley: searched for Dr. David Livingstone, and upon finding him, his search generated much publicity about colonizing Africa.

b.      Leopold II: King of Belgium who established colonies in Africa and exploited it solely for wealth and resources. He forced natives to collect rubber for him.

c.       Cecil Rhodes: British speculator who controlled the diamond production in Cape Colony. He risked his hard-earned money from diamonds on a search for gold, but lost most of it due to little findings of gold.


British governors and their council of advisers established laws for the colony, however some limited power was given to the local rulers.

 

The mother country controlled all forms of government and selected its own choices for governors. Europeans practiced paternalism, which governed colonies like parents educate children. France encouraged assimilation, in which the natives give up their own culture and adopt the ruling country’s.
