Homework #15
- The
British controlled India by way of taking advantage of all the populace.
They exploited quarrels between the little states that had formed, as well
as fights between the two religions present in India (Hindu and Muslim).
- British
rule brought Western culture and civilization to India. It brought the
English language, Western customs, sciences and arts. However, the British
rule ended up causing a great many disputes between the people, and
eventually a rebellion, in which many Indians died.
- The
British took advantage of the people and used the regions’ fierce disputes
for themselves, in order to win control of those regions. They also took
advantage of the religions found in India, especially by using cow and pig
fat on cartridges for guns during the Sepoy Rebellion.
- The
imposition of Western culture led to conflict because the natives disliked
the British attempts to take control of their lives and force them to
follow their culture. Also, the British forced the sepoys to fight wars
for the British in Afghanistan, and they were dissatisfied with this.
- Approaches
to nationalism in India include imposition of British culture, use of the
colony to better the advantage of Britain, and on the Indians’ side, the
unification of the sepoys to rebel against the British.
