Homework #10

1. What ethnic groups inhabit the former Yugoslav republics?

After Yugoslovia had been dissolved, the ethnic groups had still remained. The Serbs, the Croats, Slovenes, Macedonians and Montenegrins all inhabit the area which was formerly Yugoslavia.

2. Why is dividing up the land in the former Yugoslav republics not a potential solution?

A geographic solution of dividing up the land between all the different ethnic groups is not a feasible solution, since the ethnic groups do not tend to live in certain regions; rather, they are interspersed throughout the land, and it is difficult to unite them.

3. How did the Serbs attempt to solve the problem?

The Serbs had tried to solve this problem by fighting in Croatia and Bosnia in order to clear out a certain region for all the Serbs to live securely there. They used a practice known as ethnic cleansing – resort to violence in order to banish the non-Serbs from certain areas.

4. What was the world’s initial response to the crisis in Bosnia?

The world had been shocked to the violence occuring in Bosnia and began to question why the U.S. and its European allies did not send in troops to cease the violence and assist in establishing a stable government in the area. However, this was difficult since ¾ of the land in the area is all mountains, hills, gorges or rivers.
